SEMINAR ON INSURANCE AND RISK

MANAGEMENT IN AGRICULTURE IN MAGHREB

Following the two previous meetings on the marketing of agricultural products and cooperative systems, the Algerian, Moroccan and Tunisian think tanks jointly decided to concentrate their activity and discussions on insurance and risk management in agriculture for the third sub-regional Maghreb seminar.

The issue of farm risks exposure is becoming increasingly widespread due to the current increase in hazards for producers (climatic risks, natural disasters, pollution, health risks, liberalisation of agricultural trade, etc.) which can affect the viability of these farms. Faced with the increase in these risks and the poor adhesion of Maghreb farmers to existing insurance schemes, public policies have to be adapted and decision-makers should propose jointly with the private sector and cooperatives a variety of instruments to limit these risks and their potential impacts in order to better support producers and increase the farms resilience.

This meeting will be organised by the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fishery, in collaboration with the supporting team of ENPARD South Support Programme, on 16 and 17 May in Tunis at the hotel “Le Belvédère”.

It will gather representatives of the various groups of Tunisian agricultural stakeholders as well as the Algerian and Moroccan delegations composed of representatives of the national thinks tank of each of the country.

The Tunisian State Secretary for Agricultural Production, Mr. Omar BEHI, will ensure the inauguration of the event.

This initiative is funded by the European Union

This support program is run by the CIHEAM-IAMM
